Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary and Lodge is a world-renowned destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, located between Pretoria and Bela Bela. This sanctuary is perfectly suited for avid birdwatchers as well as those seeking a unique and relaxing bushveld getaway. The lodge is situated near Kgomo Kgomo, along the legendary Crake road, in the heart of the Pienaarsrivier floodplain.

The lodge offers luxurious, fully catered accommodation with nine beautifully decorated units inspired by local bird species, capable of sleeping up to 30 guests. Each unit is designed to provide comfort and tranquility, ensuring a restful stay. Guests can enjoy the peace and quiet of the bushveld, with the added convenience of modern amenities. The lodge also features attractive bird hides and photography hides, as well as bush camp stands and private camping sites for those looking to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary and Lodge is a birdwatcher’s paradise, boasting over 430 bird species. The diverse habitats, including floodplains, bushveld, and wetlands, attract a wide variety of birds, making it a prime location for birding. The sanctuary is recognized as a Birdlife South Africa destination, highlighting its importance and commitment to bird conservation. Notable bird species include the Southern Ground Hornbill, African Fish Eagle, Marsh Owl, and Pearl-spotted Owlet. ​ The Kgomo Kgomo floodplain, part of the sanctuary, is particularly renowned for its rare and elusive bird species. During wet years, the floodplain supports some of the most exciting wetland birding in South Africa. Species such as the Dwarf BitternGreater Painted-snipeAfrican Crake, and Lesser Moorhen can be found here. In exceptional years, birders might even spot the almost mythical Striped Crake. Other rare sightings include the Allen’s GallinuleBaillon’s CrakeFulvous Whistling Duck, White-backed DuckAfrican SnipeWhiskered Tern, and White-winged Tern. The floodplain edges are also home to the Harlequin Quail and Common Buttonquail, with large flocks of Black-winged Pratincole gathering during summer.

In addition to birdwatching, the lodge offers a variety of activities, including game drives, guided walks, and night drives. Guests can also enjoy the sight of giraffes, nyalas, impalas, kudus, and springbucks roaming the sanctuary. The lodge’s new owners have enhanced the guest experience with well-maintained facilities, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere.
