KZN's Best 5 Birding Spots

Listen to this episode here

In Season 10 Episode 2 of The Birding Life Podcast, I had the pleasure of revisiting a past interview with Michael Wright from Sustain Wildlife and Birding Safaris. Michael, a passionate ecotourism consultant and nature tour operator, shares his top birding destinations in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa. His insights are invaluable for anyone planning a birding trip to the province, especially those attending the upcoming Flock to Marion Cruise in January 2025.

From the serene Benvie Gardens to the wild landscapes of uMkhuze Game Reserve, this list offers a guide to the province’s top birding spots. With diverse habitats and a wealth of species, KZN is a true birding paradise.

1. Benvie Gardens and Karkloof Area

Benvie Gardens, located in the lush Karkloof region, is a standout birding location. Known for its incredible forest and grassland habitats, Benvie offers both tranquility and diverse birdlife. A privately owned botanical garden, Benvie features well-maintained paths, large trees, and seasonal beauty that make it a magnet for birders.

Michael's favorite bird here is the Orange Ground Thrush, a rare find in South Africa and the Southern African region. Other species to look out for include Forest Buzzard and a range of crane species. The garden has feeders to attract birds, making it easy for visitors to observe several species up close.

Practical Tip: Entry costs around R50 for adults, and it’s easy to find donation boxes onsite. The owners are welcoming and passionate about their garden, which makes the visit even more enjoyable.

2. Sani Pass and Underberg Region

Sani Pass is one of KZN's most unique birding experiences. Known for its dramatic mountain scenery, the pass is a rugged adventure that offers spectacular views and a chance to see some of South Africa's endemic species.

“It's like stepping into another world,” Michael notes. “You can go from beach to snow in a day.” His top pick here is the Drakensberg Rockjumper, one of only two endemic bird families in South Africa. You can also find species like Drakensberg Siskin and Gurney’s Sugarbird along the route.

The nearby town of Underberg is an ideal base, offering accommodation, food, and coffee spots like Lemon Tree, a personal favorite for many birders. You can take the famous 4x4 trek up the pass and even stop at the highest pub in South Africa for a celebratory drink after your birding adventure.

3. St. Lucia Estuary

The St. Lucia Estuary area, located within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, is a blend of shoreline, forest, grasslands, and swamp habitats, making it one of the most accessible and diverse birding locations in South Africa. It's safe, walkable, and perfect for exploring a wide variety of bird species.

Michael’s favorite here is the elusive Green Malkoha, which is often found high in the canopy and requires patience to spot. Other notable birds include the Livingstone’s Turaco and the Bearded Scrub Robin. St. Lucia is not just about birds; you can encounter hippos, crocodiles, and even leopards in the area, making it a thrilling spot for wildlife lovers.

The estuary itself is known for attracting rare waders and shorebirds, and it’s one of the best places to set up a scope and look for rarities.

4. Tembe Elephant Park and Ndumo Game Reserve

Located on the northern border of KZN, Tembe Elephant Park and Ndumo Game Reserve are true gems for birders and nature enthusiasts alike. The sand forests in Tembe are home to incredible biodiversity, with tree species such as Weeping Boer-bean and Yellowwood, as well as a fascinating range of birds.

Michael's favorite bird here is the African Broadbill, a tiny yet charismatic bird that often displays close to the ground. He also highlights the Plain-backed Sunbird, which is nearly impossible to see outside this region in South Africa.

Ndumo Game Reserve, in particular, is known for its impressive raptor sightings, including species like the African Cuckoo Hawk, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, and the Crowned Eagle. The reserve's guided walks are highly recommended, as knowledgeable community guides can lead you to key areas for spotting these elusive birds.

5. uMkhuze Game Reserve

Considered by many to be the crown jewel of birding in KwaZulu-Natal, uMkhuze Game Reserve offers a bird list that is hard to beat. This 40,000-hectare reserve holds 53% of South Africa’s bird list within a relatively small area. The well-designed hides are some of the best in the country, providing incredible views of both birdlife and the park’s stunning landscape.

Michael’s top pick in uMkhuze is the Pels Fishing Owl, a dream species for many birders. The reserve is also home to the Pink-throated Twinspot, another iconic bird of the region. A night drive in uMkhuze can be an unforgettable experience, offering a chance to spot various owl species and listen to the calls of nightjars and other nocturnal birds.
