Celebrating Sunbirds and Sugarbirds: A Conversation with Ornithologist Mark Brown

Listen to this episode here

In this episode, we’re joined by Mark Brown, a renowned South African ornithologist with a profound love for sunbirds and sugarbirds. Known for his work in the conservation sector and his dedication to sharing the wonders of these jewel-like birds, Mark talks about his life, his work, and the much-anticipated release of his latest project: Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds of Southern Africa.

From Conservationist to Author

Mark’s career journey reflects his passion for conservation and birding. He began his path at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he rose through the ranks from student to staff member and now holds an honorary research position. For years, he directed conservation initiatives and developed educational programs to engage students and young conservationists.

Reflecting on the importance of instilling a love of nature in the next generation, Mark highlights the Nature’s Valley Trust, a conservation project he led to empower communities and educate people about the small actions that protect local ecosystems. “Sometimes, just small measures can double or triple the breeding success of beach-nesting birds," Mark shares, illustrating the impact that awareness and thoughtful action can have on local wildlife.

Keeping Passion Alive in Conservation Work

Many people assume that when one’s passion becomes a profession, it risks becoming “work” rather than a source of joy. Yet, Mark has managed to keep his love for birds alive, even as he tackles professional and conservation-focused projects. “Birds are always there,” he says, “whether I’m working or on holiday.”

Having a family that shares his enthusiasm has been a significant source of support. Mark’s children grew up around birds, often accompanying him on bird-ringing expeditions. This shared experience strengthened their family bond and deepened their appreciation for nature. Today, his children have their own interests in conservation, which he credits as a "huge blessing."

Introducing the Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds of South Africa

After years of dreaming, Mark, together with a dedicated team, brought Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds of Southern Africa to life. What began as an idea between Mark and artist Gail Darroll in 2019 evolved into a comprehensive work that celebrates these captivating birds in both detail and artistry.

Reflecting on the team effort involved, Mark acknowledges the unique contributions of each member. Gail’s stunning, lifelike illustrations serve as the heart of the book. “Gail spent almost two decades painting sunbirds and sugarbirds, capturing every detail of their plumage and the flowers they frequent,” Mark says, emphasizing the value of the artwork as a tool for appreciating these birds’ intricate beauty.

Complementing Gail’s art, Ingrid Weiersbye and Guy Upfold, both highly respected bird illustrators, contributed photographs and layout expertise, bringing a new dimension to the project. Mark notes that their combined knowledge and experience shaped the book into something unique: a captivating blend of a coffee table book and a guide packed with scientific knowledge.

What Sets Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds Apart

Though not meant as a field guide, Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds offers insights that are both informative and accessible, appealing to birders and general nature enthusiasts alike. Unlike many scientific works, the book uses simple language, making it easy for readers to understand the fascinating details of sunbird physiology and behavior without feeling overwhelmed.

Readers will discover that a sunbird’s body temperature can reach 42 degrees Celsius, and they often drink three times their body weight in nectar each day. Other fascinating facts reveal how these birds go into a hibernation-like state to conserve energy during cold nights. The book also highlights the critical role sunbirds play as pollinators in various ecosystems—a detail often overshadowed by their stunning appearance.

Choosing a Favorite Bird – and the Difficulty of Doing So

When asked to pick a favorite, Mark is hesitant, as he finds all birds remarkable. But after a bit of prodding, he shares his appreciation for the Gurney’s Sugarbird and the Malachite Sunbird. Both species evoke fond memories of early fieldwork days and resonate with him for their distinctive beauty and fascinating behaviors.

Mark shares an anecdote from his research with malachite sunbirds, explaining how his team discovered a pollination method involving the birds' feet—a previously unknown phenomenon. “Working with sunbirds,” he explains, “is more than just research; it’s an adventure of continuous discovery.”

Practical Advice for Sunbird Identification

For birders hoping to improve their sunbird identification skills, Mark offers practical advice. “Take time to observe, especially with females, which are often less colorful and can be harder to identify.” He suggests paying attention to habitat, size, and behavior, which can be more helpful than focusing solely on color.

A Beautiful Addition to Every Bird Lover’s Collection

Roberts Sunbirds and Sugarbirds is a treasure for anyone with a love for nature. With its breathtaking artwork and accessible insights, it strikes a unique balance between being an informative resource and a piece of art. Whether you’re an avid birder or someone simply enchanted by nature’s beauty, this book offers a window into the lives of these extraordinary birds.

Mark’s dedication to conservation, education, and sharing the beauty of nature shines through, making this episode a heartfelt tribute to the impact a love for birds can have—not only on our lives but on the world around us.
