Join us at Penwarn Farm, located in the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg, for a stunning farm escape. Rustic yet modern, Penwarn Farm Lodge has 6 cottages that can be found just 25km from the quaint, little town of Underberg in South Africa. As you turn into Penwarn gate and drive down the Khyber Pass, you will be greeted with the all the beauty that Penwarn has to offer.
The self-catering homes lies in an exquisite valley surrounded by lakes, and borders Highlands Farm which was established in 1886. Over 3400 hectares of land is farmed by the fifth generation of Nicholson’s, raising cattle and sheep and planting maize and potatoes for the market. Sharing the grasslands with the livestock there are zebra, hartebeest and blesbok. Birdlife is of abundance and the cranes and wild geese can be spotted from the comfort of your room. Penwarn truly is an animal enthusiast’s paradise!
Penwarn has 5 dams on the property with the choice of trout or bass fishing, grab your fishing rod and walking shoes and come and explore the farm. Jump in a kayak and explore the Bushman’s paintings along the rock face of the river. Take a walk and explore the beautiful birdlife on the farm. The ambience of the farm is relaxed, rustic, and modern. With 6 self-catering homes on the property, Penwarn can accommodate up to 45 guests.

INFORMATION FOR BIRDERS
Penwarn is a paradise for birders and is definitely a hidden gem in the Southern Drakensberg. We have the beautiful Blue Crane and Wattled Crane on the property who come and nest and raise their young on the dams below the cottages. The Cape Vultures come and visit our vulture restaurant often and recently we had a rare sighting of a Bearded Vulture on ground at Penwarn. We have four of the Kingfisher family seen on the property, Pied, Giant, Malachite and Half-collared kingfisher seen December 2020. June and July s the time to spot the Bald Ibis on the burnt grasslands. We have a pair of Fish Eagles that nest in the oaks across from our Mziki cottage. During our winter months you can see the Fairy Flycatcher, which can be seen in the wattle and mchichi near our staff houses under the power lines.
