Finfoot Lake Reserve offers everything you could want in a weekend break or week-long holiday. Located near Johannesburg, just a 90-minute drive away, this much-needed slice of peace and quiet is within easy reach! The lodge is naturally crafted from wood and thatch, perfectly complementing the surrounding woodlands and foliage.

Finfoot Lake Reserve is a family-friendly resort with a Dream Explorers club for kids, offering an extensive programme to keep the little ones entertained. Other activities at the resort include Segway rides, canoeing, spa treatments, guided walks, and so much more.

Accommodation options include 18 family chalets, 8 bush chalets, 2 luxury self-catering villas, and 3 luxury self-catering tented camps, all located close to the Vaalkop Dam, making it ideal for families and groups of friends celebrating a special occasion. The large thatched lapa serves as the main hub at Finfoot Lake Reserve. This open-sided, breezy building is home to the camp’s bar and cosy lounge areas where most meals are served. Descend a few steps onto the sun deck, where there’s plenty of seating to sit back and soak up the view. The swimming pool is a popular spot for those looking to put their feet up with a cocktail or two.

Ornithophiles, assemble! If you’re ready to boost your life list or hone your photography skills, it’s time to book a curated birding experience at Finfoot Lake Reserve. No need to feel lucky to spot some of Finfoot’s most sought-after bird species when you’re in the company of our secret weapon: Sarel van der Westhuizen. Known as our bird whisperer, or within the local community as ‘Sarel from Finfoot’, he has over 23 years of guiding experience, with over eight years at our reserve. He knows the environment intimately, and his guided bird walks and tours are a highlight of any visit. Sarel also has a keen interest in photography and would love to help you refine your skills with the lens.

Flittering, stalking, and swooping through our 3,500-hectare wilderness wonderland are some 312 indigenous species. Among them are everything from Violet-eared Waxbill, Black-faced Waxbill, Shikra, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, African Hawk-Eagle, and Wahlberg’s Eagle to the ever-charismatic Secretary Bird… and that’s only just the start.

Since no two bird enthusiasts are the same, we can personalise each experience to your skill set, taking special requests into consideration. With the Vaalkop Dam just yonder, you also have the chance to maximise your sightings out on the water from our bird hide. From beginners to experts, all levels are welcome at Finfoot Lake Reserve.

Dedicated birding experiences are set up for beginner birders, birding photography enthusiasts, and professional birders.
